Melissa Merritt works primarily on Kant and contemporary ethics.  Her book, Kant on Reflection and Virtue (Cambridge University Press, 2018), examines how the Kantian idea of virtue is rooted in an account of the essentially reflective nature of the rational mind.  Her next project aims to get to grips with the Stoic influences on Kant, particularly in ethics and moral psychology -- and from this historical foundation to reassess the possibilities of moral rationalism in contemporary ethics.

Merritt is currently Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the School of Humanities and Languages, and Book Reviews Editor for the Australasian Journal of Philosophy.  Her research has been funded by the Australian Research Council (DP130100172: Enlightened Judgment: Reflection and Cognitive Virtue in Kant's Critical Philosophy).
