Teaches various advanced and professional level Korean language courses including Advanced Korean A and B, Korean Translation, Korean Interpreting and Professional Korean.

Supervises postgraduate research projects in areas such as: Error analysis, language teaching methodology, foreign/second language acquisition, curriculum planning, ethno-sociolinguistic issues.

Conducts research in various L2 topic areas, especially in Korean L2 contexts.

Research

Dr Seong-Chul Shin is a Senior Lecturer (equiv. American Associate Prof) in Korean Studies at the School of Humanities and Languages, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at UNSW.  He has a PhD in Linguistics from UNSW, a Master of Applied Linguistics from Macquarie University, Sydney and a Master of Education in Korean as a Foreign Language from Yonsei University in Seoul.  His research areas include error analysis and teaching methodology in L2 Korean; curriculum issues in Korean at both secondary and tertiary levels; sociolinguistic issues with reference to Korean L2 situations. He completed a number of research projects funded by the government agencies and UNSW Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (e.g. "The Current State of Korean Language Education in Australian Schools", 2010; "Lost in Translation: Australian Terms in Public Texts in Korean", 2014; "Heritage Language Learning: A Needs Analysis Study on Korean-Australian Tertiary Students”, 2015). His latest book titled "Understanding L2 Korean Learner Errors" is coming out in June 2017; and he is currently working on a project titled "Korean Language and Studies Education in Australia 1990-2015", which will also be published in Oct 2017.
