There has been, in recent years, a growing scholarly attention given to the issue of the protection of native peoples in the British empire (most notably in Australia). This workshop aims to broaden that attention in two ways: by exploring the meanings of the idea of protection and relocating its implementation in the larger context of European imperialism.
