Moving Ideas Symposium

This symposium will reflect on the moving of ideas, and of the methodological and practical difficulties a historian has in tracking them. Following recent academic trends towards a world of ‘trans’-formations, and the abandonment of the comforts and mythologies of national and statist histories, we seek to resist the blandishments and glossy catalogues of ‘transnational’, ‘global’ and ‘cosmopolitan’ ones, to ask whether the aspirations contained in such projects are impossible of accomplishment, or whether we might find the beginnings of a more productive set of approaches via a struggle with the meagre methodological resources at our disposal
