Introductory French brand new look

14 Mar 2017

In November 2016, ARTS1480 – Introductory French A was selected to be part of the PVCE Course Design Tool Pilot, among 7 UNSW courses across campus. The purpose of this trial was to review the existing course, redesign it so as to be fully aligned with the Scientia Educational Model and finally enhance it with as much digital interaction as deemed relevant.

The pilot started mid-November 2016, ended in Week 0 and involved the course convenor, Valérie Combe-Germes, as well as four Educational Developers from the PVCE office: Xanthe Lawson, Erica Leonar, Enoch Chan and Amanda Yeung.

As a result of the experiment, ARTS1480 has been completely reshaped with new Course Learning Outcomes, new assessment and provides a completely new learning experience for the students (involving a brand new textbook and contents), both in class and online. Over the weeks, the team managed to create a diversified range of online activities aimed at improving grammar and vocabulary acquisition on the one hand (Videoscribe production, HTML 5 documents with sound, online quizzes, various vocabulary games such as hangman or crosswords, video lectures, etc.) and peer interaction in the target language on the other hand (forum, blog, wiki, tweeter feeds, glossary completion, photo competition, etc.).

The course benefited from a visual uplift as well: graphic designers created a coherent theme for all PowerPoint presentations / videos and it was switched to a new Moodle version that gives it a more contemporary look.

All in all, it has been a very positive experience: the new course looks fantastic and is nearly ready to be fully delivered online. I will be able to transfer those newly acquired design / digital skills into the uplifting of my other courses and I was given access and training to software that will improve the creation of digital resources.
