Launch of the "Old Irish Sydney' walking app

17 Mar 2014

The Dictionary of Sydney and the Consul General of Ireland Sydney have worked together with Sydney based historians of Irish-Australia to highlight the role that the Irish have played in the history of the city of Sydney. Building on the project 'Greening the Dictionary' a new walking tour app 'Old Irish Sydney' has been developed.

"The app explores Irish Australian history through a self-guided walking tour that uses a GPS-enabled map with the route and stops marked on it, explanatory text, full audio commentary, images and photos. An original evocative score will be commissioned to compliment the walk" The Dictionary of Sydney

Historians who have made contributions include Global Irish Studies Centre adjunct Senior Lecturer Dr Jeff Kildea, Adjunct Lecturer Dr Perry McIntyre and Dr Richard Reid.

Audio commentary is provided by Sydney-based Irish actors Maeliosa Stafford and Aine de Paor who have worked with the Global Irish Studies Centre and Consulate on recent Bloomsday productions.

Stops along the tour include:-

  • St Patrick’s Day celebrations
  • St Mary’s Cathedral
  • Irish Famine Memorial & Hyde Park Barracks
  • NSW Parliament
  • Statue of Sir Richard Bourke, Australia’s first Irish governor
  • St Patrick’s Church, Church HilDownload the 'Old Irish Sydney' app
